It’s all over, the weekends games have concluded and there have been a few surprises. None on Friday night at Leicester though. They got crushed 4 – 0 by a Brentford side looking for back-to-back league wins for the first time this season. With only 1 win in their last 11 league games, Leicester look doomed. Brentford though, look as if they have a slim chance of getting into Europe.
Saturday’s lunch time kick-off saw Everton host Manchester United. Everton missed the chance to put some distance between themselves and Man Utd when they surrendered a two-goal lead. I was devastated, Utd were back in the game and on course for a point. And then VAR came to the Red Devils rescue by overturning a last minute penalty. Everton remain above Utd in the table and probably will remain there for the rest of the season.
Bournemouth’s push for Champions League football was dealt a blow when they fell to a surprise 1 – 0 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Just after the half hour mark, Illia Zabarnyi was dismissed for the hosts. The visitor’s wasted little time in taking advantage of Bournemouth’s numerical disadvantage. Wolves now find themselves with a five point gap between them and the drop zone and can breath a little easier.
The biggest surprise of the weekend came at the Emirates. Arsenal experienced their third defeat of the season thanks to a Jarrod Bowen goal just before half time. To make matters worse, the Gunners lost Myles Lewis-Skelly to a red card. It means he’ll miss the game against Nottingham Forest in mid-week. As for West Ham, they now find themselves 13 points clear of the drop zone.
Fulham showed why they need a top striker if they’re to have any realistic chance of getting into Europe. They dominated possession but couldn’t get a single shot on target. Crystal Palace were solid, winning battles across the pitch and well worth their 2 – 0 win.
There were no surprises at Portman Road as Ipswich Town reminded everyone why they’ll be going back to the Championship at the end of the season. Despite good early pressure, the Tractor boys failed to capitalise and found themselves 2 – 1 down at half time. Tottenham went on to win the game 4 – 1.
Southampton are destined to go down after another shambolic performance. Torn apart by a Brighton side that had scored 38 goals this season before kick-off. Brighton won the game 4 – 0. I said Brighton would need a top striker to batter Southampton but they proved me wrong.
Aston Villa grabbed a vital 2 – 1 win over Chelsea to close the gap on their rivals for Europe. Chelsea must be wondering where is it going wrong for them. That’s now 3 defeats in their last 4 league games but it’s not all doom and gloom. Their next 2 league games are against Southampton and Leicester.
Newcastle gained a big three points to move into 5th place. Their push for Europe is back on track. Nottingham Forest got destroyed in the first half after a good start. They tried to recover but it was little to late. Forest’s next 2 league games are against Arsenal and Manchester City. Not looking good for them and their push for Europe.
Liverpool moved three points closer to the title with a win at the Etihad. Man City for all the dominance they had, couldn’t find a way through a resolute Liverpool defence. The result leaves City 20 points behind the league leaders going into the final third of the season.
That’s it for the round up. Liverpool look invincible, Man Utd look like a relegation candidate for next season, Man City’s troubles continue, Arsenal are going to end the season with nothing, and Spurs showing that they can handle Championship opposition which should be enough to keep them mid-table this season.
